Spring into Spring with Crochet

Spring into Spring with Crochet

Did you know that March is National Crochet Month?  If it's not, it should be.  I have FINALLY started crocheting my Happypotomus (after months of trying to get a more experienced crocheter to make it for me).  The pattern is by Heidi Bears (available for purchase on Ravelry) and it is fantastically detailed and helpful--that means lots of pages.  You start construction from the rear end of the hippo and I'd estimate that I am up to about his waist.  This early picture shows his backside in-progress: Happypotomus I'm using Nature Spun worsted weight wool yarn from Brown Sheep.  The pattern suggested sock yarn, but I want a big hippo. The designer does a variety of animals.  I may do the pony is bulky-weight and it will be big enough to ride (maybe). The motif is relatively easy to make and I'm getting better at the join-as-you go process.  I could use some help with a more elegant colour change technique, however, so I need to get another lesson from my mother-in-law.  She's a real old-school, no-pattern-necessary knitter and crocheter.  She fell in love with the soft-handle crochet hook I was using (the 3.5 mm pictured below).  Don't tell her, but I'm getting her the full set of the Wave crochet hooks (from Knitter's Pride) for Norooz (that's today and like Persian New Year). Wave Crochet Hook Happy knitting & happy Norooz! Kate
