Classes

Choose the class or classes you want, and register from the comfort of your own computer!

Class Policies:  Classes meet in the Dartmouth Yarns shop at 122 Portland St., Dartmouth. Class enrollment is limited to give each student plenty of attention.  If your desired class is filled, we will be happy to add you to a waiting list.

Payment of all class fees is required to hold your seat in a class.  You may receive a full refund for any class registration cancelled prior to 72 hours before the first class meeting. We are sorry, but class fees are non-refundable within 72 hours of the first class meeting. In the unfortunate event that a class is cancelled by us due to low enrollment, all class fees will be refunded, with our sincere apologies. If unforeseen weather or illness requires that a single class meeting be rescheduled, students will be notified promptly and the class rescheduled.

Please make sure you read each class description fully to see skill level and material requirements. Some classes may include the cost of key materials. You will need pencil and paper, a blunt-tipped darning needle, and scissors for all classes. All materials are, of course, available for purchase in the shop & students receive a 10% discount on items purchased for class. Please feel free to call us at 422-YARN or, better yet, stop in to talk about any of the classes.

Private and semi-private knitting lessons are available by appointment. Time is priced by the hour ($40), but you can opt to schedule your time in increments of 30 minutes to help you with particular techniques or with tricky bits of a knitting project. The personalized attention available during private lessons can help you learn more and progress faster than in regularly scheduled group classes.  Bring a friend to learn with you and split the cost (semi-private).  Call the shop to discuss topics and schedule. Group lessons can also be scheduled, on demand, for groups of 4-6 students of any age.  (Please note, we do our best to accommodate all requests, but we are limited by the availability of instructors.)

Are you ready to take the plunge and become a maker of socks? Learn to knit socks the easy way, using magic loop, cuff-to-toe, with an afterthought heel.  In Meeting 1, we will introduce you to knitting-in-the-round with the magic loop technique.  After a short cuff, you will learn to make the heel placeholder and begin knitting the foot.  Your homework will be to continue knitting the foot to the beginning of the toe decreases. Meeting 2 will focus on narrowing and grafting the toe closed, then returning to finish the sock heel.  We will make a full-sized sock in class using worsted-weight yarn.

    Meetings:  Sundays, Nov. 26 1:00-4:00, and Dec. 3, 2:30-4:00

    Instructor:  Kate

Calling all sock knitters! Add a new approach to your sock-knitting protocol.  Knitting socks from the toe-up and two at a time are more efficient and elegant than the tradition way for several reasons: 1) Knitting toe-up makes it easier to try on the socks as you knit; 2) makes for more efficient use of yarn since you can adjust the length of the leg and cuff to use up every inch of yarn; 3) knitting socks together helps make sure both socks end up identical; and 4) it eliminates the dreaded "second sock syndrome".  You will learn to knit magic loop, learn a closed toe cast-on, and a super stretchy bind-off.

    Instructor:  Kate

Experience Required:  This is a master class for sock knitters.

Materials: 100g of sock yarn, wound into 2 equal weight balls (for class, you can use any two balls of same-weight sock yarn--some students find it easier to learn with different colour yarn for each sock); 40" circular needle sized to suit your yarn and your preference; 2 locking stitch markers; tapestry needle

Location: Dartmouth Yarns, 122 Portland St., Dartmouth
Cost: $20 (bring your own yarn and needles)
